Ottawa youth earns degree in education and chemistry

Pianist Jay McShann To Perform At Baker University
Jazz pianist Jay McShann and his trio will give a concert at 8 p.m. Friday February 8 in Rice Auditorium at Baker University. The event is part of the Mid-America Arts Alliance Program and Baker co curricular activities. McShann, tied to Count Basie and Mary Lou Williams as a Midwest contributor, was born in Muskogee Oklahoma and began piano at age five. He studied at Knoxville College and formed his own Kansas City band in the late 1930s after stints in Tulsa.

Tax counseling for the elderly starts Wednesday February 6 through April 10 at the Mid-America Council on Aging. Drop in 9 a.m. to noon or call 242-7200 for an appointment. Bring 1099 forms Social Security 1009 forms income records and last year's filings. Volunteers from the Tax-Aide Program led by Steve Lott Willis Jordan Floyd Coffman and Hazel Triplett assist and educate on pensions home sale tax provisions and Social Security tax changes. The program, run by AARP, operates nationwide with thousands of volunteers to aid low income seniors.
