Huntington's disease overview and guidance

Huntington's disease is inherited with symptoms appearing midlife between 35 and 50. A child of an affected parent has a 1 in 2 chance of carrying the gene. A genetic test now identifies carriers, aiding preparation for midlife symptoms. The disease damages the brain, causing facial tics, involuntary movements, slurred speech, swallowing problems, memory loss, and personality changes, with no cure. Resources include the Huntington's Disease Society of America at 800 345-4372 and the website www.hdsa.org.
