Twins study bolsters marijuana gateway theory to harder drugs
Australian twin study suggests early marijuana use raises risk of later hard drug use. Among 311 same-sex twin pairs where only one smoked marijuana before 17, early users were up to five times more likely to use harder drugs, about twice as likely to use opiates, and five times more likely to use hallucinogens. Researchers note limitations and caution about causality.
