Tobacco auction in Weston features government sales
Auctioneers chant as buyers bid on tobacco baskets while government graders set minimum prices. Hull, with 30 years in tobacco, claims the government has rarely lost money on this commodity. He doubts the report will change smoker habits, noting past scares and ongoing growth of the industry. He quit smoking four years ago due to throat irritation, not health crisis. Smith, echoing sentiment, says passing laws won’t curb tobacco use as people will continue what they enjoy.

Wheat Plan Approved by House Subcommittee
A House subcommittee approved a wheat plan by an 8 to 5 vote to establish a voluntary control system using a certificate method of payment. Acreage allotments stay at current levels for 1964 and 1965 with a basic free support of 1.30 dollars per bushel. Domestic consumption would earn a 0.70 dollar per bushel certificate funded by wheat processors, while export wheat would yield a 0.25 dollar certificate. Subcommittee Chair Graham Purcell says consumer prices will not rise as processors bear the cost.
