In Kansas City, Melvin and Gertrude Tolliver lost their 21 year home after a clerical error delayed tax bills since 1972 and a sheriff sale of $12,000 plus $2,090 in back taxes. The couple, who learned of the sale only when a new owner’s attorney arrived, say the loss stems from others’ mistakes and seek relief while the county says it cannot reverse the sale. The buyer, Kent Gates, claims the back taxes and court value were settled, and Tollivers plan to hire counsel as eviction actions loom.
The New York market closed higher as speculation that rates may peak boosted optimism. Dow rose 5.11 to 859.75, volume on the NYSE reached 34.23 million, and railroads and airlines led gains with Mobil Ramada Inns and Eastern among movers.
