Terraces Protect Brockus Acreage on 80 Acres Near Central Heights
Merle and Agnes Brockus added eight terraces and two waterways on their 80 acre Franklin County farm east of US-59 to direct runoff away from a drainage ditch. Work completed by 1980 under cost share funding, terraces seeded with brome before crop establishment. Brockus, semi retired, has farmed with relatives while also working as a machinist in Ottawa.

Pottawatomie Plans Another Dam in Creek Watershed
Pottawatomie Creek Watershed Joint District No. 90 plans a summer dam build to reach 11 completed structures. The district spans parts of five counties with 350000 acres, aiming 134 detention dams to control runoff from about 196 square miles. Dam benefits include irrigation stock water recreation and flood protection, with 70 percent state funding and 20 percent district funding. Transportation and pollution control improve downstream water quality.

River Drainage District plans and funding efforts
The District reports a busy year with a completed General Plan for Improvements, feasibility studies, and an economic evaluation of benefits from drainage. Funding from state and federal sources remains unavailable, RC&D funding uncertain, and the Conservation Commission cites policy limits. The District will promote ditch maintenance and weed control while pursuing future dam and ditch construction. meeting scheduled February 2 at RC&D in Medical Acts Building, Ottawa. Also advises against mixing tame and native grasses in pastures due to growth timing and seed size differences.
