Food price outlook for 1979 mixed by USDA economist
Retail food prices are expected to rise 6 to 10 percent in 1979, slower than 10 percent in 1978, depending on wage trends, inflation measures, and weather. Ample grain and stable feed costs should support livestock output, though beef supply may fall about 5 percent, keeping red meat production near 1978 levels amid rising income boosting demand.
