Conservation Winner Has A Feeling For The Land

Lloyd Robbins Jr. and his wife Faye of Pomona RFD 1 will be honored for outstanding conservation work at the Franklin County Conservation District annual meeting at Celebration Hall. Robbins, a longtime farmer with 695 acres, began farming after marrying in 1944 with $250 borrowed to buy two cows and a used tractor. He and Mrs. Robbins built terraces in the 1930s and a pond dug by hand, on land once owned by H. R. Murray.

Robbins Builds On Farm Conservation Plan To Grow Ponds

Robbins developed his first conservation plan in 1950 and expanded to 12 ponds across 695 acres, with 350 acres cropland, 100 hay, and the rest pasture. He uses crop rotation, brush control, and timberland management while renting 320 acres and hiring help. He also emphasizes energy conservation through south-facing home insulation and solar heating in winter.

Sometimes It’s Better In Small Doses

Carol Murphy recounts a mobile homeowner’s misadventure in conserving energy by lowering a furnace to 58 degrees. The pipes froze under the house despite dripping faucets, prompting a return to 65 degrees. The piece argues for finding a balance between conservation and preventing freezing.
