No Pardons For Wilmington Ten
Gov. James Hunt refused to pardon the Wilmington 10 as he reduced sentences for nine imprisoned men following a firebombing case in 1971. Eight will be eligible for parole this year, with Rev. Ben Chavis to parole in 1980, while the woman defendant remains freed on parole and officials vow to press federal action.

Nursing Home Hearing Fails To Win Over House Committee
Kansas Secretary Dwight Metzler faced sharp questions from the House Ways and Means Committee over nursing home ownership changes and funding. Rep. Fred Weaver pressed for assurances against fraud as the panel demanded legislative tools and more oversight, noting about 11.4 million in proposed state funds and skepticism about name changes and skimmed funds. Metzler admitted some issues are solvable with existing powers, while others require new legislation denied by the Legislature.
