Wellsville pilot to receive Distinguished Flying Cross
Wellsville native Chief Warrant Officer Robert N. Hammon, a helicopter pilot in the Kansas National Guard, will receive the Distinguished Flying Cross from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in Topeka for actions in Iraq on June 2, 2007. His Black Hawk was hit by ground fire yet he landed safely after flying three quarters of a mile. He also earned the Combat Action Badge. he served with 1st Battalion 108th Aviation during the Iraq deployment.
