Cabinet elevation for EPA backed by White House aides
White House senior staff advise support of bipartisan legislation to elevate the Environmental Protection Agency to Cabinet status. President Bush has resisted such a move in the past, citing management concerns and a 1988 Cabinet expansion. Legislation to create the 15th Cabinet department is expected to be reintroduced in coming days with backing from Sens Durenberger Chafee and Democrats Bradley and Lautenberg.
