The Ottawa Department of Public Safety launches a four Saturdays club at Municipal Auditorium starting Feb 15 for pre school through fifth grade kids. Parents may leave children 9 45 to 11 45 with DPS supervision. Registration Feb 1 at DPS HQ 720 W 2nd. A 50 cent film fee applies per Saturday. Prizes include hats T shirts bicycles and a stereo. Local donors support prize display and events.
TOPEKA Kansas AP House Speaker Mike Hayden said a constitutional amendment to establish a state lottery could pass the House floor in about two weeks but is about five votes short of the two thirds needed. He noted strong lobbying and said the measure may rely on governor and leadership support, with a plan to vote in the first week of February if votes exist. He suggested trimming earmarked lottery revenue language and instead funding a companion bill with a simple majority.
The Ottawa City Commission approved a resolution congratulating Steve Grogan and the New England Patriots on winning the AFC division and advancing to Super Bowl XX. A request to name Ottawa High School football field for Grogan was endorsed by petition, while the city moved to fund a parking lot near Municipal Auditorium for about 59,000 dollars and pursue FAA grants around 318,000 dollars for Municipal Airport improvements. The meeting also set a special hearing on assessments for 28rd and Cedar streets, adopted the 1985 uniform building code, supported a League of Municipalities annexation policy, proclaimed Jaycee Week, and retroactively proclaimed Girl Scout Cookie Time.
The Department of Education will provide Selective Service with Pell Grant tapes listing about 5 million student aid applicants to uncover males who did not register for the draft. The Solomon Amendment bars federal aid to nonregistrants, tying compliance to eligibility for loans and grants.
The Ottawa Water Plant recorded a high of 63 degrees and a low of 24 during the 24 hour period ending 6 p.m. Tuesday. County forecast calls for mostly clear skies tonight with lows around 20 and mostly sunny conditions Thursday with highs in the low to mid 40s to 50s.
