A 17-year-old Ottawa High School student, Jimmy Smith, was jailed after being arrested for aggravated battery. Police say he struck fellow student Chris Smith, 16, at Freedom Park, injuring him enough to require hospital care. The incident followed a reported desire to start a fight.
Esh Quality Structures, a Garnett firm specializing in post frame buildings, moves to Richmond in Franklin County with an open house from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on January 25-27 and 30-31. Rueben Esh says demand in Franklin and Miami counties drove the relocation. The larger site will host offices. about 75 percent of sales are detached garages with other projects like horse barns. Last year the firm built 178 structures.
Wayne Baylor and Dan Andrews accept a $5,000 gift from Tom Osterwald of B E Aerospace to fund a $90,000 horticultural therapy program and walking trail behind COF’s administrative building at 1516 Davis Road. Six B E Aerospace reps toured the facility and shared lunch with COF staff. COF has supplied oxygen masks for B E Aerospace for 24 years. A separate $500 check from Wal Mart Distribution Manager David Tyler was also given to Dan Andrews to support the same program and trail.
Franklin County officials approved higher EMS charges after Medicare shifted to a flat payment for ambulance services. Major increases apply to the most serious emergency runs from 375 to 450 dollars and the least serious non emergency runs from 225 to 250 dollars.
Franklin County commissioners at a Wednesday work session weighed creating a codes court to handle building code and zoning violations, potentially via a shared system with another county. The plan faces cost concerns, and officials may pursue cost-sharing through the Fourth Judicial District with guidance from the Kansas Association of Counties.
