Housing starts jump 12.9 percent in 1994 nationwide

Washington AP reports the Commerce Department says housing starts rose 12.9 percent in 1994 to 1.45 million units, the highest in six years despite higher mortgage rates. December fell 1 percent, but every region shared in the annual gain as single family homes and apartments were built.
