Orville W. Love of USDA SCS Topeka stresses rural needs beyond economics. He calls for soil erosion control, water quality, wildlife habitat, air cleanliness, and scenic open spaces while noting sediment pollution, highway waste, and open dumps as ongoing challenges to farm, forest, and range lands.
The Franklin County Soil Conservation District will hold its annual meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Auditorium. Kansas Bankers Association will present awards to four outstanding Franklin County conservation farmers for 1970: Bennie Stinson Ottawa RFD 1 George McDaniels Lane Bernard Fischer Ottawa RFD 1 and H Arton Jones Pomona. An election for a three year supervisor term will be held. Guest speaker George Logan WIBW TV Radio Topeka will discuss Continent Of Contrast and show a South America slide.
The Bennie Stinson farm Ottawa RFD 1 started a 1961 conservation project. Phase one built waterways by 1966 covering about one mile of 325 acres. Twenty acres of terracing followed, then 25 acres of wasteland were cleared in 1967. The family seeded pasture grasses and pledged ongoing fencing completion. Stinson raises certified soybean seed and 40 to 48 Angus cattle and, with his wife Jean, runs a meat processing plant built in 1942 and revived in 1954. The couple employ one full time and several part time workers. they have four children.
The Franklin County Soil Conservation District organized in 1941 aims to assist farmers and landowners with soil and water conservation. It operates as a legal state subdivision, autonomous and self governed, with authority to partner with government and private entities. The board of supervisors leads efforts to promote coordinated conservation plans for every farm to reduce costs and boost yields. Board members listed include Leslie Hunter as chairman, Dale VanHorn secretary, Albert Dunbar treasurer, Bernard Fischer vice chairman, and Victor Warren member.
