Oil Group Prepares to Fight S-Tax in Kansas

Richard D. Smith, president of Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association, says his group will oppose Gov. Carlin’s severance tax proposal as punitive and destructive. He notes his Range Oil Co. paid 5.2% property taxes and that industry taxes totaled $218 million in 1982, arguing the state seeks revenue but would join if truly needed.

Eye Military Pay Thaw In '85

The Defense Department aims to recover 1984 pay losses in 1985 as a pay freeze would affect 2.1 million military personnel and about 1 million civilian Defense Department workers. If Congress approves, it would be the first such freeze since 1962, with about $4.9 billion saved by eliminating raises. Defense Secretary Weinberger opposed the measure but Reagan overruled him. The plan is part of a broader budget rollback to curb spending authority next year.

New Hope For Slumping Factories Amid Oil Price Talks

U S factories operated at 67.3 percent capacity in December, the lowest on record. Analysts see potential for recovery if oil prices fall, with cheaper energy boosting industry and consumer demand. Government and industry note improving auto output in January, while OPEC members threaten price cuts amid disputes.
