Ottawa Police decline sheriff invitation to reserve deputy commissions
Ottawa police, advised by the city attorney, declined an invitation for officers to receive reserve deputy commission cards from Franklin County Sheriff's Office and join a swearing in. The move does not change operations or cooperation, as dispatch and requests still authorize officers to act in the county. Officials say the decision avoids insurance liability risks and potential jurisdictional tensions, while noting the long-standing ceremonial practice remains nonessential. Heeding the request, Ottawa officers will continue to aid in county incidents and maintain ties with the sheriff’s office.
