The full moon will turn brick red for over an hour Thursday in a total lunar eclipse visible across the Americas. Totality begins at 10:01 p.m. and ends at 12:22 a.m. with the moon regaining brightness by 1:25 a.m. No eye protection needed.

Mars Polar Lander search to end in failure

Pasadena based NASA officials announce the abort of the Mars Polar Lander mission after a fruitless search for signs of life. The $165 million meteorology and ice study craft, set for a December 3 touchdown near Mars south pole, went silent during descent and could not be revived by late morning tests. Investigators will pursue explanations for the loss.

Swede Nominated to Lead U.N. Iraqi Inspectors

Secretary-General Kofi Annan named Rolf Ekens of Sweden as the first head of the U N weapons inspection agency for Iraq. The choice drew opposition from Russia and China who said he might not be acceptable to Baghdad, while Council support remained unclear. Eckhard said Annan had exhausted options and pressed ahead with his preferred candidate.
