Ottawa Chamber schedules monthly legislative coffees and city forum

The Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Legislative Action Committee will host monthly legislative coffees at 10 a.m. through April at Peoples National Bank with lawmakers including Sen. Doug Walker Rep. Ralph Tanner and Rep. Bill Feuerborn answering questions. A candidate forum for Ottawa City Commission seekers is set for 7 p.m. March 21 at Ottawa Middle School.

Anderson County considers funding for spring beef show

Anderson County Economic Development committee took no action on a $1,000 funding request for the Grand Finale Spring Beef Show. DEVANCO, formed in 1993 by ACED Garnett City and Chamber, weighed three options including county funds, private donations, or member gifts. Grand champion heifer and steer exhibitors would receive $1,000 savings bonds, with commissioners promising funds via ACED or personal sources.

Clinton Plans Westward Swing Ahead of 1996

Tonight brings evening sprinkles with mostly cloudy skies. Lows 30s to 35 with southwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Kansas extends into Wednesday with cold, minimal precipitation. Lows in the mid to upper teens west to mid-20s southeast, highs 30s to low 40s. Thursday and Friday stay dry, warmer west. Lows 15 to 25, highs 30s to around 40 east and 40s to low 50s west.

Ottawa University official leaves post for new vocational school

Jim Smith, vice president for leadership gifts at Ottawa University, will become principal of Johnson County Area Vocational Technical School in Olathe. During his six years at Ottawa, he helped complete Ward Science Hall renovation at 2.5 million dollars, helped start the Meeker Awards, Braves Hall of Fame, and KTJO campus radio revival.

Bishop dies by own action in Boston diocese

The bishop of the nation’s largest Episcopal diocese, David E. Johnson, was found dead at his Boston home from a self-inflicted rifle shot. Johnson, who had announced retirement and a sabbatical next month, apparently died Saturday, according to diocesan spokesman Jay Cormier and police.
