SCS Goals Change With The Times
The Soil Conservation Service traced aims from soil erosion control in the 1930s to broader programs in hydrology drainage and urban rural needs through the 1960s and 1970s. District Conservationist Charles Weickert notes a three fold plan to improve environment resources and living standards while facing a personnel ceiling since 1968 and growing demand for layout work. The state office seeks funds to finish soil surveys and plan watershed programs amid already active watershed projects in Kansas including Potawatomie and Tally Creeks.

Farmer Makes Best Use Of His Land
Princeton area farmer Winston McKee 160 acres northeast of here will be honored as an outstanding conservationist by the Franklin County Conservation District. He and his mother bought 160 acres near Princeton after years renting land, boosted soil and water conservation with terraces and grass, rotates crops including wheat clover milo and soybeans, and plans to sow most of his land to grass while maintaining a small 25 cow herd. He stresses good management, living within means, and intends to sell the farm when unable to manage it. The Richmond Free Fair Association elected officers for its 49th annual Aug 16-18 fair.
