Governor John Carlin unveils a 2.78 billion dollar budget claiming balance with expected revenues. He proposes modest raises for college faculty and state workers, slight construction funding, and a severance tax on oil gas and coal to fund more for schools and highways. He opposes increasing the sales tax without exemptions for food.
The Democratic governor is framed as the taxpayer ally while Republicans face a choice between a severance tax or status quo. If Republicans do nothing property taxes rise and highways suffer, but a bold path exists: cut state services and agencies to redirect savings to schools and roads.
A Topeka summary shows 1,000 fewer farms in the state, down to 74,000, blamed on bigger operations and urban sprawl. He is praised by aides for not being intimidated by the presidency while staying uninvolved in Iran hostage negotiations. Carter makes a low‑key public appearance as the transition continues.
Dear Dr Donahue explains aspiration pneumonia from liquids or oils entering the lungs, including risks from vomiting, oily meds in infants, and inhaled fumes. It notes club soda for hypertension, defines alcoholic cardiomyopathy, its symptoms, and treatment, and urges cessation of alcohol.
The piece notes Reagan’s willingness to chat with reporters during a trip to California while Carter is seen preparing for life after the presidency, including arranging office space and sorting through his attic. It contrasts Reagan’s public interaction with Carter’s private readiness for post-presidential life.
