Immigrant Farmer's Long Path From Germany to Kansas

Erich Fruehaus, a 25 year old German speaking immigrant with a PhD in agriculture from Leipzig, travels from New York to Hudson Kansas via Hutchinson in May 1926 seeking farm work. He reaches Stafford, Kansas, aided by Robert Hupe, a German born pioneer farm family member who married into farming life after emigrating. The tale traces immigrant resilience, family ties, and early Kansas farming life through hard times.

The Kansas Immigrant Story of Hupe and Fruehauf Farmers

The Kansas Immigrant Series traces Hupe a pioneer farmer who lost his wife and children, and Erich Fruehauf who joined in 1926 becoming Hedwig Hupe’s husband. Their 240 acre farm faced back breaking toil and slow comforts, showing how second generation farming differed from the pioneering era and the role of technology in later progress.
