Jobless Rate Improves for 1978 Despite December uptick
Washington AP reports the December unemployment rate rose to 5.9 percent as the job market barely kept pace with jobseekers, ending a five month streak. For 1978, total employment rose by 3.3 million to 95.9 million and the rate fell from 6.3 to 5.9 percent, with women gaining 2.1 million of the new jobs while teen unemployment rose. Secretary Ray Marshall called 1978 a tremendous national accomplishment amid forecasts of possible 1979 job losses as inflation fights continue.
