Crossbreeding Kick On Range Cattle Breeds Gains
Robert W Bozworth argues crossbreeding across the beef industry enhances heterosis in low heritability traits. He cites U.S. Meat Animal Research Center findings of 5-7 percent weaning weight gains in two breed crosses and at least 21 percent for three breeds. Benefits include earlier puberty, shorter postpartum intervals, increased first estrus, lower embryonic loss, reduced calf mortality, faster growth, and longer cow longevity. The approach benefits native range more than purebreds.

Kansas Wheat Crop Report Shows Generally Good Condition
The Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service says wheat statewide remains generally good despite a setback last week. Winds were mostly light with limited westward damage, and no significant disease or insect issues were noted. Wheat pasture covers 20 percent of acreage, up from five percent last year and above the 10-year average. Some cattle moved off wheat pasture as stands near their grazing limit.
