Kansas Agriculture Secretary Sam Brownback urged farmers to ride an environmental wave toward new products from crops at the Agriculture Conservation and the Environment conference. He noted ethanol and biodegradable plastics, the Value Added Processing Center, and Kansas rising in export value, while drought and 1980s debt woes shape forecasts for the 1990s. Gov Hayden pressed Congress for flexible 1990 farm bill crop substitutions to align farming with market demand.

Hog Plant to Close in Arkansas City on April Six
Hog slaughtering at the Arkansas City facility will end April 6. John Morrell and Co announced it will shut the plant but continue purchasing hogs at existing rates, possibly increasing them, with shipments of hogs to other Morrell plants for slaughter. The closing stems from industry competition and local hog supply, while renovations to handle more hogs were completed before the shutdown. A soybean profit seminar is planned for Feb 14 at Celebration Fairgrounds starting 10 am with commercial displays.
