Extra Ration for Cattle as Cold Weather Bites
Kansas State University experts advise cattle producers to raise energy intake during cold snaps. For every 5 degree drop below 80 F, add about 0.4 pounds of TD N or roughly one extra pound of hay or half a pound of grain per head, with wind chill further increasing needs. Fat herds and thicker hair coats reduce requirements, while protein can serve as energy when maintenance needs rise. In extreme cold, feedlot and spring calving cows can consume poorer roughages like wheat straw, corn or milo stocks, with carotene from green hay supporting vitamin A reserves, and pregnant cows advised to receive vitamin A for over-wintering. Also warn of carbon monoxide hazards from unvented heaters and faulty exhaust systems. follow safety tips to prevent poisoning.
