Pawlenty leads Team Minnesota in victory over Old Timers

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty played in a pre-inauguration charity hockey game at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul, scoring the first goal while his Team Minnesota defeated the Minnesota Old Timers 6-2 before about 600 spectators. Pearl R. Dillon, 96, Overbrook, died January 8, 2003. Born June 2, 1906, she lived in Washington Creek and Overbrook, farmed with her husband Howard L. Dillon, and worked at the Globe Store and Overbrook Livestock Auction. Survived by daughters Jackie Flory and Yvonne Heinen of Lawrence, son Josh of Overbrook, siblings Earl and Kenneth, eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Wheat production hits 1972 low amid drought across nation

Agriculture Department reports 2001-02 wheat output at 1.62 billion bushels, down 17 percent, with winter wheat at a record low since 1970. Corn production steady at 9.01 billion, yet Nebraska yields drop to 940 million and North Carolina down due to dry weather. Iowa and Minnesota post record yields while soybeans fall about 6 percent to 2.73 billion. Florida grapefruit and orange crops suffer from cold and rain, with forecasts of 1.7 million tons of grapefruit and about 11 million tons of oranges.

Black boxes recovered from Charlotte crash flight SA81

Investigators retrieved the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from US Airways Express Flight SA81 after a Beech 1900 crashed on takeoff at Charlotte Douglas Airport. All 21 aboard were killed as the plane veered and clipped a hangar corner. FBI said no terrorism signs. pilot Katie Leslie reported an emergency before transmission cut off. Recorders sent to Washington for analysis.
