Grounded grain in state decreases
TOPEKA Kansas AP Slowly but surely those piles of grain dumped outside Kansas elevators are getting smaller. There are about 10.5 million bushels of grounded grain throughout the state compared with 31.5 million in October and November state Agriculture Secretary Allie Devine said Thursday. Some grain has been put in elevators as space becomes available and some shipped to market. Last year Kansas farmers produced a record 506 million bushels of wheat this year about enough to make 35 billion loaves of bread. Most was hard red wheat worth an estimated 1.6 billion in farm sales and hundreds of millions more in flour and other wheat products. Devine said there were near record harvests of corn milo and soybeans. Some agricultural forecasters say 1998 will mean record harvests for corn and beans.
