Education and tax talk shape Kansas Legislature preview

Legislators and educators gathered in Ottawa for a preview luncheon as tax relief, education funding, and home schooling policy dominated discussion. Assembly members Nichols and Allen voiced views on sales and income taxes, teacher salaries, and the potential legal stance on home schooling. Local superintendents and teachers pressed for clarity on funding, reappraisal, and competency testing for students while expressing cautious optimism about policy developments.

Education Board seeks large increases in school funding

Kansas Board of Regents and state officials ask for about 70 million dollars to raise teachers salaries by 11 percent and provide 7 million for special education. Additional requests cover continuing education for teachers, 2.6 million for community college aid, preschool for handicapped children, instructional equipment, TV programs, and a summer high achieving youth program. They push a Regents Program for Excellence in Educational Research and Service and monitor a five year program review while debating contract rules with teachers.
