Departure of Mid-America Nutrition shrinks senior attendance

Senior center attendance and revenue have dwindled since Mid-America Nutrition left in July. Volunteers note daily lunch crowds once numbered in the dozens, but now only a handful remain. The center has faced rising bills for utilities and cleaning, while local housing complexes offer on site activities reducing center use. Plans include a new meeting place at First Christian Church to support reminiscence and games for seniors.

Revenue Strains Hit Ottawa Senior Center

The center’s main income relied on rent from Mid-America Nutrition and public transportation. Mid-America moved to Washburn Towers in July after a contract dispute, reducing revenue as rents and utilities dropped. The center worsened financially after the move, with monthly income shrinking from 200–300 to about 1,400 and prior management failing to create new revenue.
