Pact to shift ammo plant duties to state and county
The agreement aims to transfer policing zoning and safety duties at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant from federal to state and Johnson County authorities by month’s end. It could unlock 430 acres for Johnson County Park District and add 15 square miles to patrol areas, while keeping the facility federally owned but leasable. The Sunflower advisory group has urged civilian reuse while a tax loss issue for county and schools remains to be solved.
