Americans Gaining On Coping With Tornadoes

Kansas City AP report credits improved public education and preparedness for 1980s low tornado deaths. 28 fatalities marked second lowest since records began, amid 650 tornadoes nationwide. Farm Consolidation Becoming Evident

Washington reports to farmers and policymakers that Kansas farmland acreage has remained steady at 48.3 million acres since 1978 while the number of farms declined about 1,000 annually, rising from 72,000 to 75,000. National figures show 2.5 million acres lost since 1978 with urbanization and production shifts cited. Farmers say consolidation, not total land loss, governs the trend amid higher commodity prices.
