End To US Combat Set For Fall
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird announced in Paris that American combat responsibility in South Vietnam would end by next fall. The first phase of Vietnamization should finish by midsummer, after which U.S. forces would focus on logistics air support and security roles. Phase Two aims to train and equip South Vietnamese forces to assume logistics and air support tasks, and though ahead of schedule it will take longer than Phase One.

Surprise Withdrawal Disclosed For 1st Air Cavalry Brigade
In Saigon sources report a surprise U S plan to pull at least one brigade of the 1st Air Cavalry Division from Vietnam in March as part of Nixon administration phase six cutbacks.
