Markets slide as jobs data stuns investors
New York stocks fell after a weak December employment report showed unemployment rising to 5.0 percent and payrolls gaining only 18,000. The Dow dropped 163.47 to 12,893.25 while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also slid. Bonds rose as investors sought safety, and commodities including gold and oil moved lower amid renewed recession fears.
