Lawrence Kansas preview of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown as No 3 Kansas and Kansas State meet in the first Big 12 game of the year at Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas sits 12-1 overall, 1-0 in league, averaging 86.5 points per game.
Kansas aims to stretch its 26th straight conference opener win and 12th straight win this season as Frank Mason III leads KU with 19.8 points per game while Kansas State seeks its 8th straight win and a first ranked-opponent test. The Wildcats boast defense trending strong with 58.8 points allowed and 37.7 percent shooting against, led by Barry Brown and Wesley Iwundu, in a border rivalry at Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas holds a 191-93 all-time edge and has won the last three meetings. a KU victory would keep Self era undefeated at home against K State.
Rachel Barber, a transfer from Washburn University and Topeka West High School alumna, becomes the first signee for Ottawa University’s new women’s bowling program. Barber is a multi time all city and all state honoree with a high 801 series and 300 game, set to debut with the program in the fall.
Ottawa University hosts a free boys and girls clinic for fourth through sixth graders from 10 a.m. to noon at Wilson Field House on campus. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with a signed release required. A donation of canned goods or $10 to Ottawa Hope House is suggested. For details contact Aaron Siebenthall.
Ottawa University men and women host Saint Mary Thursday with women at 6 p.m. and men at 8 p.m. The Lady Braves seek ground in the KCAC standings, while the Lady Spires come in 5-9, 4-4 ECAC. Ottawa men, 6-9, 4-4 ECAC, try to rebound after December losses. Both squads had national top 25 votes prior to the break.
