The Associated Press reports a record New Year traffic toll with more than 500 deaths over the three day observance. The count stood at 544 with late figures expected to rise, surpassing the previous New Year total of 474.
Washington reports Johnson weighing peace efforts with Pope Paul VI expressing gratitude for reform efforts. UN Ambassador Goldberg relays Rome talks as Hanoi denounces U.S. moves and demands condition set for talks. Harriman and Williams push diplomacy amid North Vietnam bombing moratorium and Ho Chi Minh vows to press for victory.
Eight persons died in Kansas traffic accidents during the New Year holiday weekend. A Sunday head on collision near Hutchinson killed driver Robert Main 21 and passenger Le Roy Davis 24. Harold Gene Smith 33 died later at Hutchinson hospital. Willis Collier Jr 45 driver of the pickup was reported in fair condition with son Ronald in serious condition. Sherry Erwin 10 of Topeka died when a car overturned on the Kansas Turnpike east of Lawrence. Seven others in the Erwin car were injured.
Three Ottawa accidents over New Year weekend caused no injuries. A two car crash on South Main at 4 33 p m involved Moody and Chapman. damages $25 to a pickup tailgate and $250 to a Plymouth front. A noon Sunday backing collision damaged Isham’s door with Peterson’s car. A Sunday North Main sideswipe between Kirkwood and Martin caused $20 damage to the Plymouth rear.
Ottawa merchants welcome the first baby of the year with gifts from Moore Chevrolet Olds. and dozens of local stores. Prizes include an Oldsmobile Toronado ride home, a Carry Me Diaper Bag, baby foods, bottles, a nursery chair, a blanket, clothing, a painting case, and a $5 gift certificate, plus savings accounts and a clock.

Washington AP Johnson spent days of private study before launching a Viet Nam peace offensive. He returned to the White House after 13 days at his Texas ranch and his aides say he favors gradual, step by step talks with no preset settlement.
President Johnson returned to the White House reporting excellent health after gall bladder and kidney stone surgery. He has shed weight but remains strong and engaged, attending church and planning key 1966 messages while weighing Viet Nam policies and civil rights.
Governor William H. Avery said Kansas has economic optimism and a bright financial outlook after a conference with legislative leaders. He cited several factors supporting a favorable budget session ahead.
Area districts 287 288 and 290 meet to set the calendar pay bills and handle routine business. District 290 will consider transfer territory from Wellsville along with standard items in a legal regular meeting tonight.
