Panama in shock as Remon assassination triggers siege
Panamanian Assembly declared a 10 day state of siege as secret police rounded up suspects in the assassination of President Jose Antonio Remon. Former President Arnulfo Arias was among those detained. National Guard Col. Saturnino Flores said Arias followers were suspected while police sought a motive and any further conspirators. Two bystanders died in the attack near Juan Franco race track. Remon’s bodyguards exchanged fire with his killers. Arias, ousted in 1951, was captured at Boquete. Foreign Minister Jose Ramon Guizado was sworn in as president in a pre dawn session, with calm announced but no motive disclosed. Officials voiced confusion over the killers’ aims and whether politics or personal enmity drove the plot.
