A 54-year-old Baldwin City man died in a one vehicle crash near the Franklin Douglas county line Tuesday. Clifford Sheldon lost control of a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick, struck a concrete bridge rail, and fell into a dry culvert. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It was the third traffic fatality of 2002 in Franklin County with no passengers aboard. No other serious incidents occurred during the New Year holiday.
Ottawa resident Barb Wolken shared her experience with low platelets after an allergic reaction, stressing the ongoing need for blood donations. The Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City notes blood supplies dip in winter, with platelets usable within five days and red cells within 42 days.
The 2002 stock market year closed with the Dow at 8,341.63, down 16.8 percent, its worst year since 1977. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also fell. December compared badly, with the Nasdaq posting its worst December ever and the Dow and S&P 500 their weakest December since 1931. Market fears centered on corporate misdeeds, terrorism, oil prices, and rising tensions with Iraq and North Korea.
Washington AP reports newly laid off Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased by 13,000 to 403,000 last week after two weeks of decline. The four week moving average rose to 418,750, the highest since September, with the jobless rate at 6 percent and forecasts for 6.5 percent early next year. Analysts cite Iraq war uncertainty as a factor curbing hiring and investment as the U.S. economy recovers from a March 2001 recession.
