The National Association of Purchasing Management index fell to 52.5 from 54.4 as new orders and production cooled. The reading kept 19 straight months of growth for manufacturing and 80 for the overall economy. Prices paid rose at a slower pace, and exports slowed to 50.6 from 54.2, signaling ongoing inflation relief but weaker growth.
At noon on Wall Street the Dow Jones industrial average rose 8.22 to 7,916.47 after opening with a 44 point gain. The blue chip gauge, which jumped 23.6 percent in 1997, showed early strength before retreating and then recovering.
