President Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev exchanged televised New Year greetings, pledging peace while maintaining positions on Star Wars and arms talks. They spoke of Geneva, nuclear danger, and a hope for a 1986 free of nuclear threats, ending with Russian phrases for clear skies.
Franklin County Sheriff Rex Bowling said 40 year old Larry K Crawford of Custer City Oklahoma was arrested without incident while unloading bags at DeKalb Pfiser seed company in Ulysses. The arrest followed a robbery and kidnapping at a rest area eight miles south of Ottawa Tuesday night involving Thomas Scott and Dawn DeBrabander. A gun was recovered during the arrest and Grant County deputies assisted. Continued on Page 8.

The Bay of Pigs fiasco, Castro's Marxist Leninist stance, and decades of hostile policies define the hostile stand each side maintains toward the other. Reagan and Castro afterwards exchange sharp comments reflecting mutual distrust and ideological opposition.
