Unclaimed property fees draw fire in Kansas budget dispute
Kansas lawmakers clash over funding the State Treasurer's Office as Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushes fees for unclaimed property. Treasurer Lynn Jenkins argues fees unfairly take Kansans' money while Democrats say a small handling fee is reasonable to cover costs. The unclaimed property division holds more than 126 million and returns about 8 million annually. Democrats note past plans to fund agencies with fees and highlight existing banking fees on other departments.
