Water standards debate reveals urban rural split in Kansas
In Topeka a legislative fight over water quality pits farmers and ranchers against environmentalists and some urban lawmakers. The Senate Natural Resources Committee will hear SB 204 with a subcommittee proposing a compromise to reclassify streams and lakes, potentially easing standards for minor waterways while addressing the 1999 EPA challenge. Local critics warn weaker rules could worsen downstream water quality, while supporters argue new classifications avoid wasting time on already minor streams.
