Pope opens period of penitence in Vatican Ash Wednesday
Pope John Paul II began Lent by presiding at Ash Wednesday services inside the Vatican to spare him a cross-city trip. At 83 and frail from hip knee issues and Parkinson’s, he appeared in good form, delivering a strong homily and outlining a busy Lenten slate including beatifications, Vatican Masses, a Good Friday service at the Coliseum, and Easter Mass in St Peter’s Square. He urged care for abandoned children and noted exterior penance should reflect inner resolve toward good.
