Topeka Kansas AP Republicans cut more than 9 million from Gov Carlins university budget recommendations. The 11 member committee reduced proposed faculty salary increases from 8 percent to 7 percent and operating fund increases from 6 percent to 5.5 percent, the steepest university cuts in a decade.
Two more black children, 10 year old Dempster Williams and 14 year old Terman Heard, were reported missing in Atlanta. Police say cases not yet turned over to the special task force focusing on 20 other missing or slain children. Public Safety Commissioner Lee Brown notes missing persons unit will check runaways first.
Buckingham Palace called a Guardian report that Prince Charles will be made governor general of Australia after his July marriage to Lady Diana Spencer speculative. A palace spokesman cited existing Australian appointments and stressed government input limits, while noting Sir Zelman Cowen's ongoing tenure. Charles plans a April tour of Australia and New Zealand.
A Kansas Senate committee calls for a 15 percent tuition hike across seven state universities with flexibility on its application among residents, non residents, graduates and undergraduates. KU, K State and Wichita State would rise from 280 to 324, Emporia, Fort Hays and Pittsburg from 220 to 253, and Kansas Technical Institute from 150 to 172.50.
