A Herald archives account notes that on May 24 25 1856 abolitionists led by John Brown killed Doyle Doyle Allen Wilkinson and William Sherman at Pottawatomie Creek near Lane in Franklin County. The beating and sword deaths occurred at Dutch Henrys Crossing a ford on the California Road linking Fort Scott Lane Ottawa and Palmyra present Baldwin City. A Virginia Road bridge overlook and markers mark the site with rusted cars in the creek bank as relics of erosion control for railroad tracks.
