Bonner Springs city manager Weldon Padgett, 43, has been named Ottawa's new city manager by the Ottawa City Commission. Padgett resigned Tuesday and attended Wednesday's meeting in Ottawa. He led Bonner Springs for three years and previously managed Iola for 4 1/2 years, after serving as assistant to Arkansas City’s city manager. Ottawa officials cited goals in economic development and employee pay structure. Padgett faces immediate budget work and a late plan on a Johnson County salary study.
Ransom Memorial Hospital plans to buy and renovate the former Apple Market at 901 S. Main into rehab services. The project includes an in house MRI five days weekly, a women s imaging center, expanded ER space, and a new lab waiting area. Auxiliary donates 100000 for the imaging center. Implementations target Oct 1 grand opening.
Ottawa Police searched G Willikers Deli & Bar after receiving a videotape showing potential victims in a private area. Darrin Votan, 31, of Lawrence, part-owner, was arrested on one count of eavesdropping as officers served a search warrant and closed the venue. The investigation targets possible other victims and may involve multiple charges as victims are identified.
Franklin County prosecutor John Dowell described John Powell as dragging and abandoning Barrett Riley after a June 9 confrontation. Powell, 45, Overbrook, faces second degree murder charges for Riley, 39, Lawrence, whose body was found June 11 near Shawnee and Indiana. Powell said he attacked Riley with a baseball bat and loaded the body into a truck before dumping it in a field. Powell’s attorney argued a more complex scene involving Riley and others at Michael Powell’s property.
