Farmers celebrate grain victory after USDA ruling

About 1,000 Midwest farmers gathered in Likeiston to mark a victory over the federal government in a week-long confrontation. Wayne Cryts defied a court order by removing $250,000 worth of soybeans from Ristine Grain, later learning that if grain is stored under a federal loan, the original warehouse receipt stays with the lender while the farmer holds a nonnegotiable copy. The ruling allows a lender to seize stored grain to satisfy creditors if an elevator fails, risking private ownership and prompting cries of precedent. Cryts plans to surrender if federal marshals call, as officials and farmers debate the implications for warehouse receipts and farm finance.
