Ottawa faces Lawrence Friday night in a decisive Northeast Kansas League game that will determine the loop champion. Ottawa must win to share the title as Lawrence seeks sole possession. Coach H K Stevens vows a full effort despite illness and injuries in a pivotal contest.
Baker defeats McPherson 91 to 83 while Bethel counts one score. Bethany leads Ottawa 71 to 60 with Wesleyan TS noted in the page.
Mike Magac of Missouri and Dwight Nichols of Iowa State topped the 1959 Big Eight-Missouri Valley Conference awards poll. Magac is the first non-Oklahoma lineman winner, Nichols repeats as best back. Other top finishers include Peppercorn, Romig, Thompson, Sloan, Haynes, Prentice, Weldner, and Boyd.
Moore's bowlers displaced Willis to take first in the Ottawa Women's Bowling Assn tournament. They added 89 pins to their Monday night score, reaching 2,893, with Towner's moving into third at 2,795 and other teams including Peoples National, Pence, Kansas State, Nitcher, First National and Eagles Auxiliary also posting strong totals.
DES MOINES AP Freshmen will be eligible to play for the Drake football team this fall the athletic council said. Athletic Director Jack McClelland said the move speeds rebuilding after a 2 7 mark in 1959. Bus Mertes who resigned as Kansas State coach last fall was hired as head football coach at Drake. The decision has Missouri Valley Conference approval though Drake does not compete for the football championship.
Bethany's Swedes stay undefeated at home by routing Ottawa 71-60 as second-half rally and strong free throw shooting secure a share of the Kansas Conference lead. Sherm Price and Doug Ade led Ottawa with early scoring, while Bethany pulled away after halftime behind Larson Mansker and Ade in a tight league race.
Henry Hank, 24, fought Sixto Rodriguez in Chicago Stadium and halted him in the sixth round of a scheduled 10 rounder. Hank broke his right hand on the final punch and faces 6 to 8 weeks out after X rays confirmed a fracture. Rodriguez suffered only his third loss in 29 starts as Hank extended his streak to six victories and 29 knockouts.
Milwaukee general manager John McHale and star pitcher Lew Burdette remain near agreement on a contract. Burdette demanded a substantial raise or would sign only when the stadium freezes over, claiming a 22 percent cut was offered. McHale denied that figure and suggested Burdette’s 1959 salary was around $40,000 as the two sides prepare to finalize terms.
U S hockey goalie Larry Palmer was injured during a Tuesday practice in Squaw Valley California twisting a knee while blocking a shot. Dr William Atmore said the injury could be a ligament strain and Palmer may still play in the Olympics. Coach Jack Riley said they hope Palmer returns before the 10 day competition ends leaving McCartan as the remaining goalie from St Paul Minnesota.
Two non league games close the Franklin County basketball season with Princeton at Westphalia and Greeley at Richmond set for tomorrow. Greeley defeated Richmond 59-49 earlier. Princeton sits 9-3 in second place, while Williamsburg leads. Other standings place Appanoose fifth, Lane sixth, and Rantoul last. Wellsville meets Springfield in the Little Seven.

Rookie Bob Ferry sealed Hawks’ win by making two free throws with 1:48 left.

Soviet Union expected to dominate as ceremonies led by Vice President Nixon unfold under Walt Disney, featuring a 2645-voice choir and the torch flame. Carol Heiss and David Jenkins lead U S figure skating hopes alongside Penny Pitou and Betsy Suite in alpine skiing.
