Coaches clash with Brand over college sports business

NCAA president Myles Brand said college sports is not a business, drawing fire from Big 12 coaches led by Bob Knight. Knight argued the sport is a big business with CBS contract and salaries demanding strong management. Bill Self and Melvin Watkins echoed the view, calling college sports a business or small business, driven by sponsors and athletics departments. Knight named John Lucas as Big 12 MVP front-runner, while newcomer of the year contenders include Curtis Stinson, Drew Lavender, and P J Tucker. Texas A&M, 0-10 in league play, drew cautious praise from Kelvin Sampson who said they looked good on tape.
