Wingert opposed to breaking KU Medical Center from university
Former state Rep. George Wingert told a Senate committee he would oppose taking the University of Kansas Medical Center out from under university reins. The panel unanimously recommended Senate approval of his appointment to the state Board of Regents, which oversees six state universities and Kansas Technical Institute. Wingert, a 49 year old Ottawa businessman and K State graduate, disputed separating the medical center and hospital, cited concerns about control and finances, and suggested possible agreements with Nebraska for veterinary medicine slots at K State. He declined to comment on absorbing Washburn University and urged running current institutions rather than adding new ones.

Kansas House kills 55 mph speed bill in committee
The House Transportation Committee killed the bill needed by Kansas Highway Patrol for enforcing the 55 mph limit by voice vote. Only about three of 21 members supported the measure. It would have changed how speeding convictions within 56 to 65 mph affect driving licenses under a 12 month violation rule.
